Job ads in early 2022 that specifically included virtual reality (VR) increased dramatically after Meta rebranded in October 2021.

Recent research reveals that Meta’s dramatic decline in VR job ads comes as its founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, gambles $10 billion on realising his vision of a metaverse.

Workplace research platform Revelio Labs reports that, despite the recruiting freeze and layoff season caused by the global economic disaster, virtual reality job posts have slowed down at other Big Tech businesses like Apple and Google.

Job ads in early 2022 that specifically included virtual reality (VR) increased dramatically after Metarebranded in October 2021.

“Recent destruction of employment demand is largely due to the bitcoin meltdown and tech slowdown. Late in 2021, when demand for VR specialists was highest, market leader Meta reduced its recruitment efforts,” According to a new article on the Revelio Labs blog.

Surprisingly, it was discovered that, since October 2021, Accenture had published more VR-related job posts than Meta.

It was found in the survey that “when we compare the skill share discrepancies between Accenture and Meta,” the VR roles at Accenture had a considerably larger share in design-focused abilities. In contrast, those at Meta emphasise research and product development more.

However, Accenture “is presumably trying to harness current technologies to assist its customers in adapting and function in the metaverse” rather than do groundbreaking research.

According to the research, “tech companies dominated in demand for VR expertise during the boom,” however, businesses from various sectors were also interested in using virtual reality to take their offerings into the “metaverse.”
