This new touchscreen technology lets you feel the texture of images

The next generation of touch display technology is known as “iTad,” or interactive Touch active display. It allows users to feel the textures of pictures as their fingers travel across the touch surface.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras have created a novel touchscreen display technology that allows users to feel the textures of pictures as their fingers travel across the touch surface. Current touchscreens can only detect where your finger touches the screen.

It is the subsequent generation of Touch Display technology and is known as “iTad,” or interactive Touch Active Display. The software allows researchers to produce a variety of textures, including sharp edges, switches, and rich textures that range from smooth to gritty. On smooth physical surfaces, interaction takes on a new degree of life.

In iTad, there are no moving parts. Instead, a built-in multitouch sensor tracks finger movement, and software regulates surface friction.

The programme modifies friction locally when fingers move across a smooth flat by manipulating electric fields via a phenomenon known as “electroadhesion.”

A resonating voice coil produces the buzz of warnings and confirmations you are accustomed to hearing from smartphones. Until now, touch feedback has only been available as vibrations, such as those found in mobile phones, known as “Vibrotactile.” A single controller and solid-state actuator make up the fully integrated iTad surface haptics technology; thus there are no moving parts.

The size, shape, and surface of textures and haptic effects can be coordinated, particularly those on large, curved screens. The applications for iTad’s adaptable solution are numerous. With a sweep of the finger, users may feel every texture effect produced by iTad.
