Elon Musk’s brain chip company Neuralink to begin human trials!
Elon Musk-run brain-machine interface company Neuralink is preparing to launch clinical trials that will implant brain chips in humans.
Elon Musk’s brain-interface technology company Neuralink may start implanting microchips in human beings from 2022. Neuralink is preparing to launch clinical trials that will implant brain chips in humans.
Cofounded by Elon Musk in 2016, Neuralink is working on a chip that would be implanted in our brains to record and stimulate brain activity. This chip is being created for medical applications such as treating serious spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.
“Neuralink’s working well in monkeys and we’re actually doing just a lot of testing and just confirming that it’s very safe and reliable and the Neuralink device can be removed safely,” Elon Musk said “We hope to have this in our first humans — which will be people that have severe spinal cord injuries like tetraplegics, quadriplegics — next year, pending FDA approval,” he added.
Elon Musk is hiring a clinical trial director for Neuralink. The job description says that the director will “work closely with some of the most innovative doctors and top engineers, as well as working with Neuralink’s first Clinical Trial participants. As the clinical trial director, you will work closely with some of the most innovative doctors and top engineers, as well as working with Neuralink’s first clinical trial participants.”
“You will lead and help build the team responsible for enabling Neuralink’s clinical research activities and developing the regulatory interactions that come with a fast-paced and ever-evolving environment, “ the advert for the role in Fremont, California, added further.
The main aim of the project is to provide a direct connection between a brain and a computer to overcome the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), using a “sewing machine-like” device to stitch threads to an implanted brain chip.
What all is possible with this brain chip?
Musk recently said that Neuralink’s brain chip technology would allow people to stream music into their brains effortlessly.
Musk confirmed the feature recently over an exchange with a Twitter user who asked: “If we implement Neuralink — can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature.” Musk replied with a simple, “yes”.
He has also confirmed that the chip would be able to control hormone levels, which would have the potential to help with anxiety relief, among other things.
Neuralink isn’t the only company developing brain-interface technology. A 20-person biotech firm called Synchron obtained FDA approval to start human testing in July 2022.
