Digitalisation is improving industrial energy efficiency: President & Lead Business Manager, Motion Business, ABB India

Read this exclusive interaction, where Sanjeev Arora, President & Lead Business Manager, Motion Business, ABB India talks about utilising high-efficiency motors and driving technology to improve energy efficiency.

ABB is a technology company that energises the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future. By connecting software to its electrification, robotics, automation and motion portfolio, ABB pushes the boundaries of technology to drive performance to new levels.

We reached out to Sanjeev Arora, President & Lead Business Manager, Motion Business, ABB India to understand the utilisation of high efficiency motors and how the company is driving enhanced energy efficiency through technology. Read the excerpts below.

Can you tell us about the latest technological drives that are helping businesses to achieve their energy efficiency goals?

We have always been at the forefront of introducing new technologies that help businesses to achieve higher energy savings. Our high-efficiency motors and drives, which can power almost every aspect of our daily lives, have become an invisible ally in the fight against climate change. Electric motors have undergone a period of exceptionally rapid advancement in the last decade, with models today that are over 95 per cent efficient. This technology can play a crucial role in bringing significant energy efficiency improvements in India’s industry and infrastructure.

India has IE2 as minimum efficiency classification for motors, however, globally most industrial motors are at IE3 and many organisations have upgraded to IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors. ABB’s IE5 ultra-premium efficiency EC Titanium™ and SynRM motor-drive package offer up to 40% lower energy losses compared to IE3 motors. By pairing IE5 SynRM motors with drive, customers can achieve higher energy savings, reduce cost, and improve production.

While upgrading a motor offers significant efficiency gains, greater energy savings are achievable when it is used in combination with a variable speed drive (VSD). A VSD adjusts the amount of electricity consumed by the motor to match the exact amount of energy needed at any given moment, so no energy is wasted.

What’s the role of digitalisation in improving industrial energy efficiency?
In the coming decades, digitalisation will transform energy systems around the world, making them more connected, intelligent, efficient, reliable, and sustainable. The Industrial Internet of things can be a key enabler in improving energy efficiency. Connecting smart sensors to their driven equipment will make it possible to monitor their performance remotely and to securely collect data. By monitoring motors or drives remotely, we can see where it is performing well or where it’s inefficient, find the gaps in efficiency and maximise energy savings. For example, electric motors might be upgraded to the highest efficiency levels, such as IE5. Ineffective methods of speed control, such as throttling, might be modernised with variable speed drives that can typically boost energy efficiency by 25%.

Recently, you launched the Energy Efficiency Movement in India. Can you tell us about the initiative?
At ABB, we are very passionate about energy efficiency and want to bring this topic up on everybody’s agenda. Through this initiative, we want to raise awareness and initiate action to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. We want to partner with people and organizations who are championing energy-efficient technologies and work towards decarbonising industries in India. This is not just a movement for ABB and our stakeholders. We want everyone to become a part of this initiative and drive the conversation on energy efficiency forward.

Are there any new innovations in the pipeline for ABB?
Improving energy efficiency for our customers will continue to be our priority in the coming months. We will focus on creating innovative digital solutions that enhance the performance and health of our powertrain solutions. We have also planned to integrate more clean energy into our operations and develop technologies focused on utilising solar energy.
