According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s AR headset could arrive in 2022, powered by two CPUs. The device could handle both Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), as well as micro-OLED displays, when it is released next year. Apple has previously made advances in AR technology on the iPhone and iPad with LiDAR technology on the iPhone 12 Pro.

The company’s augmented reality wearables have been rumoured for months, and the analyst predicts that the iPhone will be replaced within a decade.

While Apple has yet to reveal any plans for AR or VR headsets this year, Kuo believes the Cupertino company will debut a strong AR headset in the fourth quarter of 2022. The rumoured AR headset could have processing powers comparable to those of a Mac and work independently of a Mac (PC) or an iPhone (phone) while supporting a variety of applications.

According to Kuo, Apple’s AR headset might be powered by two chips: one that is more powerful than last year’s M1 Mac and another that is less powerful but manages the headgear’s sensors. According to Kuo, the device could contain virtual reality capabilities and two Sony 4K micro-OLED panels.

The analyst believes that the company should position the AR headset “independently” of the iPhone and Mac rather than as an accessory in order to sell it with its own ecosystem. He also claims that the computer power of the headgear would be more than that of the iPhone, which requires three optical modules to operate at the same time. The AR headset could require “at least” six to eight optical modules for “continuous see-through AR services,” according to the study.
